The newly assigned commander of the Liberia National Police (LNP), to the Metro Base Depot on Center Street, Central Monrovia, has disclosed that 60 percent of residents of the area are cocaine and marijuana users.
Christopher Roberts said besides the use of drugs, criminal activities in the area are on the increase, something which he said, needed to be put under control by police.
Commander Roberts, who recently took over the Depot, however, said the efforts of the police at the Depot in the fight against crimes were being seriously undermined by lack of much needed logistics.
Speaking Thursday in Monrovia, the Police Depot Commander said, ‘it is a very difficult task for one to operate the Center Street Depot without vehicle and other equipment.
Officer Roberts, who took over the Depot as its commander about three weeks ago, lamented that he and his men have been strategizing on how to bring under control illegal drugs users and other crimes in the area.
He also revealed that ‘about 60% of Center Street residents are drug users’ and therefore needed serious attention.
He said one of the most important measures being put in place is to identify “informers among the criminals and their hideouts.”
He emphasized that Metro Base Depot had a lot of works to do, because the Center Street and its surroundings were infested with criminals and drug addicts.

The Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) has said that it considered the validation and subsequent drafting of a proposed legislation leading to the establishment of a Commercial Code and the setting up of a “non-jury” Commercial Court in Liberia as its own project.
According to the Bar’s president, Cllr. Cyril Jones, LNBA is interested in the drafting of the Commercial Code and the establishment of a Commercial Court, the first of its kind for Liberia.
Cllr. Jones said it was now the responsibility of the LNBA to ensure that this Code/Court was done properly and enacted into law through the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) which is responsible to drive this under the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS).
The CBL has already made available financial and material support to the process leading to the establishment of the Commercial Code/Court while the International Finance Corporation (IFC) is providing technical and financial support to the process through the Liberia Better Business Forum (LBBF).
Speaking at a one-day validation workshop hosted by the Bar Association, in collaboration with the CBL and the IFC, held at Thinkers’ Village on Friday, September 3, 2010, the LNBA president congratulated the CBL and IFC for their supportive roles to the process.
