Highjack a plane? Not too uncommon during the Seventies and the Eighties and the waning years leading up to the turn of the Century!” Fly it to Cuba? That was the fad (the thing to do) back then. But ply it into the World Trade Center? Now, that was unthinkable!
Just about a week from today, the unthinkable did happen as we panned the skies over Manhattan from across the Verazanno Bridge on September 11, 200: the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were successfully attacked! The U.S. took the worst hit on American soil ever, nursed its wounds and buried its dead.
After some time, life would returned to normal we would return to what at that point seemed the duty of living; but an umbrella of invulnerability no longer canopied the American skies; in its place, a threat of follow-up attacks loomed—the apprehension of it forever embedded in the American psyche.
It seems no more than yesterday that those numbing images burned themselves into our memories: a plane slowly approached one of Gotham’s twin towers while the world held its breath . . . waiting . . . hoping . . . many praying that it would turn out to be a movie-shoot.
