The Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) has said that it considered the validation and subsequent drafting of a proposed legislation leading to the establishment of a Commercial Code and the setting up of a “non-jury” Commercial Court in Liberia as its own project.
According to the Bar’s president, Cllr. Cyril Jones, LNBA is interested in the drafting of the Commercial Code and the establishment of a Commercial Court, the first of its kind for Liberia.
Cllr. Jones said it was now the responsibility of the LNBA to ensure that this Code/Court was done properly and enacted into law through the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) which is responsible to drive this under the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS).
The CBL has already made available financial and material support to the process leading to the establishment of the Commercial Code/Court while the International Finance Corporation (IFC) is providing technical and financial support to the process through the Liberia Better Business Forum (LBBF).
Speaking at a one-day validation workshop hosted by the Bar Association, in collaboration with the CBL and the IFC, held at Thinkers’ Village on Friday, September 3, 2010, the LNBA president congratulated the CBL and IFC for their supportive roles to the process.

Counsellor Peter Amos George, Jr., a private legal practitioner and former presidential candidate in the 2005 General Elections, was dragged to court yesterday for allegedly taking away some mining equipment from a Chinese company in Weasua, Gbapolu County, without the consent of management.
Court records listed the equipment as one front-hand loader machine, two dump trucks and a 25-KVA generator belonging to Precious China Liberia.
The Magisterial Court at the Temple of Justice issued the warrant of arrest charging the prominent lawyer with theft of property, fraud, and impersonating as an official of the Chinese company.
The case is being preliminarily heard at the Magisterial Court at the Temple of Justice in Monrovia.
The records said it was Counsellor George, who negotiated for the company coming to invest in Liberia.
Due to the information he provided, the owners of Precious China awarded a contract of US$2.5 million for him to manage the company. Cllr George and the financier of Precious China were reported to have agreed that all properties of the company and a logging company in the country (TREE), also under his administration belong to Precious Hong Kong, financier of the US$2.5 million contract.
