The human rights monitor department of the United Methodist Church of Liberia says government has failed to provide equal opportunity to individuals with disabilities.
The department head, Jefferson Knight, said it was appalling to see persons with disabilities being left behind government reconstruction drive.
Speaking at the end of a two-week workshop on peace and human rights of the disable, Knight said his department has observed that the rights of persons with disabilities were being downplayed.
He quoted the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights of persons with disabilities as saying that all persons were equal and must be treated equally by government.
While such UN declarations rest on the books, the UMC human right director said government has also failed to provide a smooth learning and open opportunity to persons with disabilities in various public institutions.
He named the United Methodist University (UMU) as the only university in the country that has provided a higher education program for persons with disabilities.
“It is unfortunate to note the only one university is involved into this process. It shows the lip service played by government in meeting the needs of persons with disabilities,” Mr. Knight noted.
He, however, maintained that it was time that Government paid more attention to the disable community.
