SICKLE CELL DISEASE (SICKLE CELL ANEMIA) PART I

Posted By: admin on August 30, 2010 in Uncategorized - Comments: No Comments »

Sickle Cell Anemia (Sickle Cell Disease) is a disorder of the blood caused by inherited abnormal hemoglobin, (an oxygen carrying protein within the red blood cells). The abnormal hemoglobin causes distorted (sickled) red blood cells. The suckled red blood cells are fragile and prone to rupture. When the number of red blood cell decreases from rupture (hemolysis), anemia is the result. This condition is referred to as a sickle cell anemia. The irregular sickled cells can also block blood vessels causing tissue and organ damage and pain.

Sickle cell anemia is one of the most common inherited blood anemias. The disease primarily affects Africans.
HOW IS SICKLE CELL ANEMIA INHERITED?

Sickle cell anemia is inherited as an autosomal (meaning that the gene is not linked to a sex chromosome) recessive condition whereas sickle cell trait is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. This means that the gene can be passed on from a parent carrying it to male and female children. In order for sickle cell anemia to occur, a sickle cell gene must be inherited from both the mother and the father, so that the child has two sickle cell genes.

Family Operation: Part I

Posted By: admin on August 25, 2010 in Uncategorized - Comments: 8 Comments »

On my way downtown a few days ago, I jumped into a cab in time to catch one of the main points of a heated debate among my fellow passengers—men mainly: ‘who’ brings ‘what’ home financially and how the home dynamics could and often changes because of an increase or decrease in income earned by one spouse or the other.

The man in the front seat contended that trouble starts as soon as the woman begins to earn more and starts contributing a bit more toward the family’s upkeep: meals, school fees, hospital and other routine expenses.

And how does that translate into “trouble?” The woman becomes “full of herself,” as the conversation went, and soon finds it necessary to take her case on the road; that means, announcing to as many in the community interested in other people’s affairs, what a great ‘breadwinner’ she is.

And the poor husband? You guessed it: all of a sudden, a “good for nothing who no longer brings anything home,” as the wife’s story went. Needless to say, the poor fellow soon found himself a bit less that the ‘man’ in the house that he used to be. Next thing, his self-confidence began to drop.

CARDIAC (Heart) CHEST PAIN IN CHILDREN:

Unlike in grown-ups, chest pain in children due to heart cause is extremely uncommon. However, keep in mind, that the following conditions are rare as you review the causes of chest pain.

PERICARDITIS is an inflammation of the heart lining (covering of the heart). It is usually caused by a treatable or self-limited infection, but can have other more serious causes. Typical pericarditis pain is sharp and in the center of the chest and may spread to the shoulders.

CORONARY this can be due to congenital abnormalities of the position of the heart.
WITH OXYGEN Extreme thickening of the heart muscle and prolonged episodes of fast heart beat can also limit the hearts’ blood supply. Children may experience a typical crushing central pain that spreads to the neck, chin, or to the left shoulder.

Troubled breathing and sweating may also occur. Any child with these symptoms should be quickly taken to see a doctor.

MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE: (Problem with one of the main Valves of the heart). This is a minor abnormality of the heart that allows the main pumping chamber of the heart to fill.

The Beatitudes and Character Formation (part two): an Introduction to the Beatitudes

Posted By: admin on August 23, 2010 in Uncategorized - Comments: 13 Comments »

The goal of this article of the series on the beatitudes and the necessity of character formation is to make a strong case for using the beatitudes of Matthew 5 as tools for the formation and maintenance of good character. Character, in the sense of the inner part of a person that is responsible for the person’s attitudes and actions, deserves serious attention. But before delving into the beatitudes and character development, let us summarize what was discussed in the introductory article of this series. The following observations were made:

A good character (what the Bible calls a good name) is better than silver and gold, position, power, and fame. But what is character? Why is it essential for the development and destiny of every human being? What is needed to produce and promote good character? Character is what makes a person who he/she is. It is the inner part of a person that makes him/her good or bad.

The character of a person determines his/her actions, decisions, attitudes, priorities and general direction in life. It is the dominant feature of a person’s life. The total mental and moral qualities that make up a person’s worldview and attitude are what constitute his/her character. In essence character is an attribute, a person’s reputation for good or ill; the strength of a person’s nature. Thus a person can have a good character or a bad character.

Rivalry in Polygamous Marriages: Part II

An African polygamist

We are continuing our discussion from last week on how dramatic rivalry in polygamous marriages can be, especially when rival wives are residing under the same roof. Women & Family underscored serious challenges faced by women who find themselves in these situations and how competitive it can be when it comes to doing everything to establish their worth in their husband’s eyes.

Today, we are focusing on friendship between/among rival wives; contributing factors to polygamy and the effects of such marriage on the children.

Friendship in Rivalry

Rivals can hardly be true friends because they share the same man and even if they try to pretend, their friendship gets easily disrupted because they are often vying to win the attention of their husband.

In rare cases, there may exist very ’slim’ mutual understanding and respect between them. The second wife could be forced to refer to the head wife as “big sister” in an effort to establish some sort of harmony between them. It is quickly assumed that perceived sisterhood between rival wives limits the tendency of frequent clashes between them.

However, this understanding can be easily eroded because a bigger understanding that they are in competition for their man’s intimacy, attention, his time and his love will always be the bottom line.

As Enthusiasts Encouraged to Participate In Selection Exercises

Football enthusiasts in and out of the country have been encouraged to select at least 23 players, comprised of foreign and local based, and send the listing to the local football governing house, the Liberia Football Association (LFA), as a way of participating in the selection process of the senior Lone Star.

The group under the banner “The Road to 2012” in a press release dated Monday, August 16, 2010, is urging Liberians to take the initiative of getting involve in the senior Lone Star team, as compare to other nationals in Africa and the rest of the world.

The group believes, if Liberians can rally around the national team, by using the print and electronic media, to suggest the best players of their choice, patterns of playing, amongst others, this will guide the two-month old contracted Hungarian coach, Bertalan Bicskei, on how to his selection of players.

The group also believes that Coach Bicskei will also be aware that Liberians desire qualification and for the red-white-&-blue flag to be hoisted for the third time in continental football fiesta.
